The Li Vurgacci Trail in Pioraco

In the lush heart of the Marche hinterland, just off the ancient streets of the village of Pioraco (MC), a stunning natural landscape unfolds: the Li Vurgacci Trail. This hiking trail, approximately 500 meters long in its shortest version, winds through the gorge carved out by the Potenza River and offers visitors an immersive experience amid waterfalls, ravines, wooden walkways, and sculptures hidden in the rock.

Starting from the center of Pioraco, the trail quickly leads into a cool, shaded setting, ideal even on the hottest days thanks to the spring water and the dense vegetation that surrounds the gorge. Along the way, paved with wooden walkways and stone steps, you’ll reach the evocative “Fossa dei Mostri” (Monster’s Pit), a natural clearing where local artist Antonio Ciccarelli has carved numerous faces and stone creatures into the rock, giving the place a truly fairy-tale atmosphere.

The trail is accessible and suitable for families or anyone looking for a refreshing break in nature. There are several options: a short route, which starts from the center of the village and takes about 20–30 minutes, and a scenic route, which is slightly longer and has a greater elevation gain, offering a wider view of the valley and the village and taking about an hour to walk.

We recommend wearing shoes with good, non-slip soles, as some sections may be damp and slippery. Access is free and available year-round, but in the fall and winter, it’s a good idea to check the trail conditions. After the hike, it’s worth taking a stroll through the village of Pioraco, also known for its paper-making tradition.
The Li Vurgacci Trail is a hidden gem in the Marche region: a blend of nature, steps, footbridges, water, and art carved into the rock that offers breathtaking views and a rejuvenating break surrounded by greenery.
