HABITUS—the National Museum of Folk Costume, located in Castelraimondo—is a place where tradition becomes a contemporary language.
The museum was founded to explore the culture of folk costume and folklore as living, dynamic elements of our collective identity. Through clothing, objects, photographs, musical instruments, and multimedia installations, HABITUS invites visitors to explore the symbolic value of dressing, celebrating, and being together.
Every costume holds a story: that of a people who find their identity in a gesture, a song, or a color. But HABITUS goes beyond a simple exhibition: it interprets folklore as an active social practice, a space in which culture is constantly being renewed.
In this context, folk groups are regarded as cultural heritage communities, guardians of shared knowledge and, at the same time, key players in the present Their work keeps memories alive and fosters social cohesion, creating opportunities for intergenerational interaction and exchange among people, cultures, and diverse experiences.
HABITUS is, therefore, a museum that does more than simply preserve; it listens and engages. It is a laboratory for research and experimentation where the past engages in dialogue with the present, and where costume is not merely clothing, but a testament to a community telling its own story.
Through exhibitions, events, and educational activities, the museum encourages reflection on the value of intangible cultural heritage and the role of traditions in shaping the future.
